The Curious Incident of the Elusive Prawn

PrawnIt’s 5pm and the pasta is on. Baby Billy is constantly chanting ‘Mum, Mum, Mum, Mum, Mum’. I know this won’t stop until I pick him up.

Winnie Whirlwind is screaming in her room. For some reasons she decided it would be a good idea to wet herself on the bus on the way home, so has been sent upstairs to change. She is not very keen on the idea!

Sammy Skateboard is slowly eating his way through every unhealthy item of food he can find in the cupboards.

And Hairy Horace is running up and down the garden incessantly barking at imaginary cats.

I am holding on to the thought that tomorrow I will be going to work. I will be having conversations that make sense (well maybe), with adults. But best of all I will have a lunch hour! That’s right a whole hour to myself! Yipee.

So, we have survived the first two weeks of my return to work. And now I’m wondering why I ever imagined it would be a good idea to resign. So far there has been very little fallout at home, (the above is the norm), but I don’t want to tempt fate, it is early days! Fingers crossed it will continue as I am enjoying having something else to think about.

Unfortunately it is taking a while for my brain to get back in to gear. It seems mushy brain syndrome is not limited to birth mothers! My brain is definitely not yet functioning at full capacity.

After only two days back in the office I attended a two day event with wall-to-wall meetings. I found myself being asked questions that 14 months ago I would have been able to answer instantly. But my mind was blank. I can’t count the number of times I had to answer: “I will get back to you on that one…”

But my piece-de-resistance was at the evening ‘networking’ event. I have never understood why they serve canapés at this type of event. They are impossible to eat at the best of times, let alone when you are holding a drink in the other hand and also trying to make polite conversation.

However I was starving so made the fatal mistake of accepting some sort of edible looking bite-sized morsel topped with a prawn. I still have no idea what it was, as when I went to take a bite the whole thing splatted on the floor. That is, all except the prawn, which slipped down my top. I could feel it sitting in my cleavage. Being in polite company I didn’t think rummaging was an option. An hour or so later the prawn worked it’s way down and plopped on to the floor. Not my finest of moments, however in the grand scheme of things, I guess my return to work could have been a lot worse!
